Porcelain Crowns

What is a Porcelain Fused to Metal (PFM) Crown?

Porcelain fused to metal crowns are a hybrid of porcelain and metal crowns. The entire crown has a metal layer underlying with porcelain on top. The metal framework is thin, strong, and perfectly fits the prepared teeth. When the tooth is prepared for such crowns, a large part of the tooth structure gets removed making space for porcelain as well as the metal. Even though the porcelain layer is tough and withstands the chewing forces well, its strength is not as high as zirconium or glass ceramic and can break or chip off from the teeth.

PFM crowns are best suited for the back teeth as in case of receding gums, the metal underneath starts showing distinctively. It should be kept in mind porcelain tends to wear out the opposing teeth in the long run and also increases the chances of gingivitis. Gingivitis is the inflammation of gums. Redness, swelling, pain, and bleeding are the signs of gingivitis.

Benefits of Porcelain Fused to Metal (PFM) Crowns

  • Underlying metal makes the crown stronger and stable. The metal enhances the bonding to the tooth.
  • Porcelain has a variety of shades to choose from to make it blend in with your other teeth.
  • PFM crowns are a preferred choice when bridges in the long term are required and night grinding is a problem.

Steps of the Procedure

1 st Appointment

  • Clinical examination including matching the shade of the crown with your natural teeth, evaluation of the X-Ray and consultation.
  • Administration of local anaesthetic.
  • Preparation of the tooth by removing a small amount of tooth structure.
  • Taking an impression of your tooth by means of an intra-oral camera or conventional mould filled with dental paste which you will be asked to bite into. The impression will be then sent to our on-site dental laboratory where your crown will be fabricated.
  • Placement of a temporary crown until your permanent crown is ready. Avoid sticky or hard food and avoid chewing from that side until your final fitting appointment.

2 nd Appointment

  • Checking the fitting in terms of bite, size, shape and colour. When the results are satisfactory, the crown can be polished and cemented at the second appointment in some cases.

3 rd Appointment

  • Final adjustments, polishing and permanent fixing of the crown. One or two extra appointments might be arranged for perfect fitting where needed.

Your teeth may feel fine, but it’s still important to see the dentist regularly because problems can exist without you knowing. Your smile’s appearance is important, and your dentist can help keep your smile healthy and looking beautiful. With so many advances in dentistry, you no longer have to settle for stained, chipped, missing, or misshapen teeth. Today’s dentists offer many treatment choices that can help you smile with confidence, including:

  • Professional teeth whitening
  • Fillings that mimic the appearance of natural teeth
  • Tooth replacement and full smile makeovers
Why is visiting the dentist so important?

Visiting the dentist regularly will not only help keep your teeth and mouth healthy, but will also help keep the rest of your body healthy. Dental care is important because it:

  • Helps prevent tooth decay
  • Protects against periodontal (gum) disease, which can lead to tooth and bone loss
  • Prevents bad breath – brushing, flossing, and seeing the dentist regularly will help reduce the amount of bacteria in your mouth that causes bad breath
  • Gives you a more attractive smile and increases your self-confidence
  • Helps keep teeth looking bright by preventing them from becoming stained by food, drinks, and tobacco
  • Strengthens your teeth so that you can enjoy healthy, beautiful smiles for the rest of your life!
